metzengerstein
roger vadim (and god created woman) injects his special brand of stylish sensuality into this bizarre tale of the beautiful, capriciously cruel, baroness metzengerstein (jane fonda), who taunts her subjects by day and conducts depraved orgies by night. when a large, wild, black stallion charges onto the castle grounds, the baroness becomes convinced that it embodies the spirit of her dead cousin (peter fonda) with whom she was in love - unaware of the beast's true, deadly purpose. sumptuously photographed by claude renoir and featuring wildly provocative costumes designed by jacques fonteray (both artists worked on vadim's 'barbarella' which also starred jane fonda). 'metzengerstein' remains the most sexually suggestive treatment ever of a poe story.
william wilson
william wilson, a sadistic young man (alain delon) is plagued by a look-a-like who checkmates his every cruel and violent move. malle (au revoir les enfants) skillfully balances visceral horror and delicate sensuality as wilson prepares to dissect a live, naked young woman and, later, whips brigitte bardot after she loses to him in a card game. it's an eerie struggle for self identity as wilson battles his double to the death. but which side will win?
toby dammit
"for me, the devil is friendly and joyful," exclaims toby dammit (terence stamp). "he's a little girl." freely adapted from poe's "neverr bet the devil your head," 'toby dammit' is fellini at his surreal, grotesque and frenetic best. dammit is a burnt out, drunken british actor in italy to star in the first catholic western, for which he is promised a new maserati. but no matter how fast he drives it, he can't escape the cherubic child from hell with her ghostly, glowing, bouncing ball. with its bizarre, unearthly images, 'toby dammit' is a frightening tale that the critics have never forgotten - and neither will you.
