The work takes its title from Haydn's Nelson Mass, composed in 1798 during the Napoleonic Wars. It has devised a complex text, drawing on multiple sources. Underpinning the entire structure is the Ordinary of the Mass (with added Introit). The musical setting reflects the diversity of the texts. For example, the Latin text of the Mass is treated in a largely polyphonic style. There are also English poems and Middle Eastern texts (in Turkish, Syriac, and Arabic).
