Nel clima festoso di Parigi appena liberata dall'occupazione tedesca, il tenente americano Charles Willis conosce e sposa Elena, di famiglia molto benestante. Nasce una figlia, Vicki, che i genitori adorano, ma il matrimonio entra in crisi per diverse ragioni: lui non guadagna abbastanza ed entrambi cercano consolazione altrove. Il dramma esplode con molta durezza.
